Should I Pull The Trigger???
On a CPO 2002 540i with 43,000 miles. Dealer is asking $33,995. 6 speed with CD based navigation.
Are CPO's reliable? Salesman said BMW doesn't certify cars with frame damage, but they do certify cars that have been in minor fender benders. He said he could run a Carfax history for me.
Do you think I should haggle more on $33,995? Of course he gave me the obligatory "We're already losing money on this deal. It's been on the lot for 81 days since no one in Los Angeles wants a manual transmission."
I'm trying not to decide with my heart since I know a 6 speed with navi is hard to find in the first place.
Thanks in advance.
| | Reply » Should I Pull The Trigger??? | There has been a lot of debate here about the value of CPO and how stringent the standards are but to me yes it is worth it especially since that car is either out of warranty or about to be. 540/6s are supposed to be a blast to drive, they are notorious for radiator failures between 60k-75k miles sometimes earlier. I can't comment on the price other than it does not sound too bad. Good luck, and if you get it think about all the mods you can do.

| | Reply » Should I Pull The Trigger??? | It had the ///M spoke steering wheel. I know it came standard on 2003 540i's. I'm not sure about 2002. I'll check Edmunds.com.

The actual dollar value of a CPO is hard to say, but my E38 was a CPO car and I liked having the warranty. While I have been very fortunate, I did have some repairs done under CPO and it made the extra purchase cost worth while. But CPO is no guarantee that you will get a perfect or nearly perfect car. Many think you should still check it out with an independent shop and pay for a buyer's inspection. A good shop who knows BMWs will be able to tell you if there are things that need attention that CPO will cover.
I think this is correct:
All 540i's with the 6-speed manual transmission sold in the US should have the sport package.
The 540i sport package included for each model year (note that many automatics also have the sport package):
1997: Sport package includes 17inch Style 19 wheels with high-performance tires, and the sport suspension (slightly lower than non-sport suspension).
1998: Same as 1997, with the addition of Shadowline trim around the doors and bumper moldings/door rub strips. Sport seats were added to the sport package sometime during the MY 1998 production.
1999: Same as 1998, except Style 19 wheels are replaced by Style 32 17inch wheels. Additionally, various M-badging is added, as well as a 3-spoke steering wheel. At some point during 1999, 17" Style 66 wheels become a sport package add-on, for roughly $300.
2000-2002: Same as 1999, except the sport steering wheel goes through some subtle changes over this period.
2003: Same as 2002, plus M front and rear bumpers, a single-tip exhaust pipe, and 18" Style 37 wheels. Sport suspension MAY have changed slightly in this year (it has a new name, but it may be the same as before).
Good luck with your decision!
