radiator 98 540ia
Recently purchased a 98 540i automatic. Great car. I found out that the 540s have radiator problems after I bought one. With 65k I hear that my radiator can fail at any moment. I am noticing fluid around the cap and radiator. BMW service guy told me that it is just the radiator "burping" and that it shouldn't be an issue.
Is this an early warning sign that my radiator will soon cause problems? If so, what other warning signs are there? I really would appreciate someone out there to educate me a little on these radiators. Any recomendations on radiators? I hear Nissens are good. I need to be enlightened!

Before 9/98 17 11 1 702 969 $153.20 After 9/98 17 11 1 436 060 $99.96
Other things you would want to do at the same time: 17-11-1-741-167 EXPAN. TANK $53.20 17-11-1-742-231 RADIATOR CAP $6.36 17-11-1-723-117 CAP $2.04 17-11-1-712-788 8-BLEEDER $2.56

If you have any leakage around the expansion tank cap, it could be a faulty cap. If you have splatter at the nipple on the other side of the radiator, take a look at this post: Radiator Nipple
But at your mileage, I would probably just replace it with an OEM radiator and give you peace of mind for the next 50K miles. DIY Radiator Replacement (On an E38, but should be similar.)
Another option is an aftermarket aluminum radiator. (About $550 for the part.) It has been said without an aluminum expansion tank, you will still have that as a weak link. Here is the Griffin aluminum radiator from VAC Motorsports or Zionsville. (Photos from J.Goga, E38er.) He said the person who put did the install was very impressed with the perfect sizing and fit. I need to be enlightened! | Sitting infront of the filler cap is what looks like a plastic screw where the head is about the size of a penny. This is the bleeder valve for the rad. If not closed completely it could spurt some fluid out when temps and pressures build up. Check to see its securely closed. usually the problem with the rads is on the other side, driver side. The neck that comes out of the rad usually snaps because of temps, strain and age. Coming back on the side of the filler cap and bleeder, the expansion tank, where the filler cap is on ususally starts to leak at the bottom. Another issue to watch for if you get a check coolant level warnign and the neck is secure and teh expansion tank doesn't leak is the hoses going into the heater core. They usually sprout a leak and could warrant a change as well.
