Greetings Everyone,
I am new here, but not new to BMW's. I have had 5 series BMW's since 1985. I have continued to purchase them because they are safe and they handle well, as you all know.
My 2001 525i was the first BMW I bought with the lower bumper. I wish they would have *Disclosed* to me that I had better stay away from parking curbs in parking lots or the inner rubber part of the front bumper would pull away leaving exposed wiring from the lights and cost about $350 to repair.
I paid for the repair, but the inner bumper was never the same. It was still loose.
About 2 weeks ago, I was driving 90-95mph on the Freeway from Oceanside to San Clemente, Ca. when I thought I had a flat tire in the stretch of the freeway in the middle of Camp Pendleton, so there are no offramps.
I pulled to the side and found that due to the force of the wind, the inner bumper had completely pulled away and was getting eaten up by my front tire.
Since that time, I have looked at any and all 5 series BMW's and they all seem to have the loose front Bumper.
Would you please check your inner front bumper carefully and see if yours if also pulled away?
I had to pay another $299 yesterday to have it repaired and there are screws missing! They replaced all the inner rubber, but if it's not held on properly, the same thing will happen.
I paid this much for a car to feel safe and I don't feel safe going fast speeds any longer.
I look forward to hearing from you all.
I also filed a complaint with BMW of North America. I think this should be a disclosure/recall item.
Please feel free to e-mail me also.

Had both sides break loose on mine. Local BMW shop charged $30 parts / $20 labor to replace both sides.
I didn't see any exposed wires, just the plastic in the wheel wells rubbing against the tires when I sped up.

Geez! I had to pay $299! Of course labor was $180!
That's it though. I called them up this morning and told them I wanted my old parts. The one side is eaten through, but the other side should be fine.
Thank you all for the response.
If this has happened to any other posters, please reply.
Thank you,

Every time I see a BMW in a parking lot, I am inspecting their bumper on the inside and they either have a loose bumper or they have missing screws.
This appears to be pretty widespread. One lady I spoke with at the gym said she was just in for a bib inspection and they failed to say anything or point it out.
I am telling everyone to call BMW of North America to report this. It is a major safety issue when the bumper comes loose and starts getting ground up in the tires.
