My E39 2000 model has just started venting or leaking air from somewhere. When ever i put my foot down and the revs reach more then 2000rpm, I can hear air leaking from somewhere. It sounds a lot like them supercharged cars. I am loosing power when the gears change and the air sound only happens when the gears change as well. Anybody got any clues as to what is happening here

Sometimes this can be caused by a pinhole in the exhaust system and under high exhaust airflow conditions, a hissing or similar sound can be produced. Less likely would be a restricted exhaust system (cat clogged for example) causing high backpressure therefore causing a leak around the exhaust manifold gaskets.
Out of sheer morbid curiousity, I'd like to know what you find.

It's more of a gush of air release then a hissing noise. Maybe it is the exhuast as no other failure lights are coming up on the dash. I shall have that checked out. Thanks

How many miles on your diesel? We here in the US might not be that good at diagnosing BMW diesel engines...at least I'm not!
The last time my 2001 530i (US) had a power problem was when it hit 4k rpm. Turned out that my MAF (mass air flow sensor) was the problem.

For those who wanted to know what the problems was, took it to my mechanics who saw that air flow pipes for the intercooler had become loose. All the air going to the turbo was leaking therefore the car was fuming alot and also there was no power there. He tighten the jubilee clip and hey presto, car was running like new again.
