not only at the local bmw dealer but the other surrounding ones in the area seem to have never heard of the bmw 5w40 synthetic oil. especially open road. parts guy there stated the he has never seen the stuff. in my other post regarding my oil filter someone mentioned that once bmw comes out with the new oil, 5w30 in this case, it replaces the old one (5w40). now i'm not too sure if that's the case for the missing 5w40 but I just seem to be unable to find the stuff. the part number for 5w40 is also on the sticker in the engine bay of the new 6 series, so I don't see how it has been replaced by 5w40m unless the sticker is out of print as well but has made it's way into that engine bay.  |

I already posted in your sludge thread about this. It has been superceded by the 5w-30 when BMW switched suppliers from Valvoline to Castrol.

how reccent was this? because it just didnt make sense for a brand new 6 series to have the same sticker in my car suggesting 5w40. there also have been talks about using the 5w40 instead of the 30

Sorry, even in Europe, the only BMW oil grades that exist are 5w-30 and 0w-40. The only 5w-40 oil I could think of from BMW was the old Valvoline-supplied oil, and that doesn't even meet LL-01 spec (it was LL-98, I think).
WHat's the PN on the sticker? I'd bet it's either an old number, a non-US number, or refers to a 5w-30.
Not that it would make any lick of a difference WRT your sludge problem.

are you sure you label says 5/40? Every modern oil label i've seen, other than my M5 (which specifies 10.60) says "use bmw longlife synthetic:" pretty generic. I've seen 5/30 and 15/40 (non-synthetic, at the dealer) but never bmw 5/40. In europe, i've seen references to 0/40 as well (this is from a uk m5 board).
Just thinking of what my 528 and wifes previous 02 525iTa had, no specific weight, just 'bmw longlife synthetic'.

I don't think the differences between 30 or 40 weight will make much difference in the overall scheme of things; it seems these two weights are pretty interchangeable.
The good part is that BMW oil is a great deal at the dealer and you know BMW has approved it.
