K&N Air Filter - Is it worth the cost?
Does anyone have a recommendation on the K&N air filter?
Does it provide better power and fuel economy that you can notice?
Thanks,
Texbmw
| | Reply » K&N Air Filter - Is it worth the cost? | I would recommend you search the archives....there are many threads on the subject, and many opinions. A stock oem filter is $10 to $15. The K&N is around $33 for a 540, and $36 for a 528. A maintanence kit is around $10. So after 4 or 5 changes you are ahead money wise....but what is the factory replacement interval, 60k miles? Say you are extra careful and change it at 30k intervals. It will be 120k to 150k miles before you are equal to using the factory filter.
As far as performance, with the stock type replacement panel K&N, the performance is probably negligable....you might gain a few hp, but nothing you can feel. You will gain some intake noise, which you may like.
The big controversy is whether it allows more dirt in...which it seems to do. The bigger question is whether this dirt is significant enough to pose a problem. Some would say any amount of extra dirt is not worth it. I have used K&N filters on several cars that went to 120k and 165k miles before I sold them....but.....I am not currently using K&N's on my Ferrari or 540...I might put them on...or, I may not. I'm undecided at present.
If you decide to go for it, this place has good prices and service: http://www.performanceintl.com/shop/index.html Free shipping too!

Most such instances are caused by our typical "if a little is good, more must be better" attitude. Only apply the oil lightly from the "intake" side, and not the back. Don't overdue it, and this will be a "non issue". The filters come "pre oiled", so this will only become an issue during the first service.
