Wait until the BMW endorsed iPod adaptor comes out in July 2006. You must have a third generation or newer iPod (dock connector). You will then be able to do a multitude of functions on the iDrive. Please watch the video below.

Click on the "new iPod interface coming soon" link, then click the "watch video" link.

All you have right now is just aux input which accepts any audio player with audio output. It cannot be called Ipod jack. It must be called aux audio input jack.
Ipod adapter for E60 won't be available either end of June or July.

For your car, if you have nav, you can go to dealer and ask them to perform MP3 software retrofit. This enables you to play MP3 on DVD or CD player.

Click here for my full (after 1 day of ownership) report on having the iPod interface.

I was thinking about getting an iPod and having my 530xi modified but after looking at the video announcment, I've changed my mind! I realized that I'd have to give up the CD changer but not the Sirius radio? Also, why couldn't they (BMW) do things right and change the labels on the iDrive display to show genre, etc. rather than keep the CD1, CD2 designations? The iPod interface should be in the center console, not the glove box.

I think this is a crude attempt at an iPod interface and is being rushed to market without the engineering and technical details that I appreciate in the car. Shame on you BMW - do it right or don't do it.

How about an XM radio interface?

Why would BMW do an XM radio interface? They have an exclusive deal with Sirius. Hence, no XM.

I don't understand your statement about having to give up "not the Sirius radio" either.

Re the location, if you can show me how the Interface itself would fit in the console....
