Just bought a 2005 530i and am a bmw newbie

My question is, I have the basic sound in the car, if i want to upgrade to a new speaker system aftermarket system, Infinity or something, will the idrive be affected and will i have to have it reprogrammed or anything?

Thanks

I don't have a clue about the sound system, but welcome to the forum from another Boston area person. What Benz did you convert from? I had an E320 wagon (still have, actually), but I'm back to BMW. Psst. wanna buy a Benz?

Eek its going to be a PITMFA to upgrade it.

I dunno about I-drive but for my current maxima....IF (and trust me you gotta if you wanna keep idrive) you wanna use the stock controls....meaning you have to upgrade the speakers and stuff

I dunno how the stereo is wired in the 530i and what speakers it uses.

In my experience with Maximas for bose in the 1995-1999 there was an amp for each speaker in each door

In mine the 5th gen 2000-2003 theres a small amp in the trunk

but theres also an issue of the stock system running diff ohms so thats a new problem in itself

that would require adapters to still comply with the stock headunit

If electrically everythings pretty much the same between stock and aftermarket

all you'd need is a 4 channel amp to provide ample power to the speakers....aftermarket speakers might not hit as hard in bass as stock speakers because speakers were not made to handle that much bass

subwoofers are

so I recommend consulting circuit city (much better than best buy no need for an appointment and theyll put you on priority if somethings broken if they installed it)

theyll take a look at everything and tell you what you need to get done to still work with idrive

I think you'll need:

some sort of adapter

small 8 or 10 inch sub

4+ channel amp

regular rear speakers

front components

Not many people at all upgrade sound in a 5 series they either get the logic 7 or be happy with what the stock is....truth be told it will be very difficult because i highly doubt there is an adapter or anything of that sort for the 5 series

Best of luck to you.
