 Premium Sound vs Logic 7

I am trying to come up with a final configuration for my 530i. I am getting Nav also so I will have a DVD for MP3s too - but I won't be able to use the Nav when I play music so maybe the point is moot. I have an older iPod, non dock, iPod so I don't know if a jury rigged solution would be great for me as I would rather use the iDrive controller. I believe there is only one power adapter available and it is not low profile. I also don't want too be fiddling around with my iPod while I am diriving.

If I got the Logic 7 standalone instead of the Premium with CD player then I would save $600, not a lot considering it is going to be a $60,000 car. Whew. iPods are kinds of replacing CDs, but I don't know if it makes sense for me to purchase another iPod and then pay BMW to connect it with the iDrive - not exactly sure how this will work or how much it is going to cost. But I was thinking that I could burn different genres of music on six cds and that would be a pretty good solution. But I don't want to spend a $600 on a cd changer that might go the way of the cassette tape.

Maybe I answered my own question. But just in case I didn't what would you do? I would appreciate your input.

IMHO I would forego the Premium Sound and just get the Logic 7. I think you would get better usage out of the new setup with the IPOD. Remember, it would also save you some storage space.

iPod sound quality is not up to that of a CD. However, I find the CD changer in the glove box to be a Mickey Mouse solution - royal PITA to change out discs.

My solution would be to forego the Premium sound, burn MP3 CD's, then plop a "real" CD into the in dash slot whenever you want "good" sound quality. I also like having Sirius - for the price of 1 CD a month, I get MP3 quality sound, and lots of variety.

My $0.02

I have Premium Sound, and would have got just Logic7 if I could have. Also, the CD changer is loud when changing - out of character with the rest of the car. I also burn MP3s for the center player.

Ipod can use WAV files as well - same audio as CD audio basically, so unless the connection to the Ipod is inferior (e.g., analog into the audio system) to the CD connection, then the quality should be the same. You get a lot less music on the Ipod that way, but a 60 GB Ipod should be able to hold about 120 CDs at full quality WAV files.

Might be tough to know how the IPod connects since that announcement didn't give a lot of details - my guess is it uses a digital connection since it can access control of the unit and provide play-list and title info to the iDrive. If true, sound quality should be as excellent as the CD changer.

So let me get this straight regarding the iPod solution:

BMW does and update to your car computer.

You attach an iPod to the aux adapter and power through a charger.

Then you will be able to use iDrive to select play lists and scroll through your songs just like the iPod?

Is that correct?
