 Audi A6 3.2 S-Line vs. BMW 530xi

I'm looking for a new mid-sized luxury car to replace my I30. I narrowed my choice down to either an '06 Audi A6 or '06 BMW. I need was a car with a good AWD system, a luxurious interior, and a bit of sport.

I was really impressed with both of these cars. Similarly equipped (Premium package, Nav., and sport packages), these cars are very similar in price. My limit is $55k and they both fall within that range. It is a difficult decision, both cars handle very well, and the Audi's interior is spectacular with amazing materials. Nonetheless, the cars feel very different.

This is a BMW forum, so I won't take what you guys say too seriously, but I'm looking for feedback from anyone who looked at these two cars. Thanks.

Senot, I did alot of research in regards to these two cars. I have only ever owned Audi and have never owned a BMW.

1) The Audi is a few thousand less than the BMW at similar levels
2) The Audis interior is impecable compared to the BMW
3) I liked the outside styling of the BMW
4) I liked the ride of the BMW and for some reason the Audi seemed to glide off the ground when starting from a stop and accelerating fast(huge negative points in my book) I was told by both dealers that it was probably a weight distribution issue
5) As far as price it was easy for me because the dealer I deal with has both Audi and BMW so it was a great negotiating tool. My ultimate choice stickered at just over $58k and I dealt the 07' to $56k.

The ultimate reason I chose the BMW 530xi was ride and I could NOT GET used to the new grill on the Audi....a alittle to Audibangle for me...good luck

Also are you planning to buy or lease. For a variety of issues, including Sales Tax savings, many people here prefer to lease. In general, BMW leases are very competitive. Especially if you are willing to do European Delivery and wait for a few months.

Edit:
I just noticed that you are in IL so will have to pay sales tax on the full price of the car even if you lease. In CA you just pay tax on the lease payments. But even then the ED program can easily save you 10% of the MSRP for the BMW.

I am leasing, and both cars are very expensive (close to $800 a month).

My wife and I also were comparing the same cars and had driven them both several times. If you decided on the Audi, please make a decision to buy an '06, because the free maintenance ends with the '06 model year and the '07's will no longer offer the free maintenance. With the BMW free maintenance you can now even consider a '07.
The base price increase went up a bit for '07 models.

We ended up purchasing a '06 550i because of the great lease rates on the '06's (probably to clear inventory) over the '07 models.

The General Manager of our local Audi Dealership is a close friend of the family and he let my wife and I drive a A6 3.2, A6 3.2 S-Line, A6 4.2, and A6 4.2 S-line. We loved the look fo the S-line, but the 530ix we drove handled so much better. The Audio felt so "heavy" to drive and seemed sluggish off the line. The fit and finish along with the features per dollars seem to favor the Audi A6. I love the secondary navigation readout in the dash console between the speedometer and tachometer and the electronic parking brake. The Audi technology package gets you this plus their version of comfort access for a reasonable price. I do not think the Audi resale value is as high and his may help your residule at the end of your lease term. Plus, at lest where we live (Oregon) the Audi owners want BMW's, and there are not too many BMW owners wanting Audi's.

Good Luck on your shopping,

Don
