Two days my E60 showed two faults: (1) DSC failure, and (2) Hill Assist Brake failure. These faults stayed on all day, so they aren't a one-time glitch. I made an appointment at my dealer that day and took the car in yesterday.
Today my service advisor called me and said that the "steering sensor' was bad. Unfortunately this is a common problem as he told me BMW has FIFTEEN HUNDRED BACKORERS for this part!! Yikes! He said he'll call me Monday with an estimate of when they can get the part. Hopefully it won't take more than a week. In the meantime I've got an X3 rental that is fine for a few days.
Has anybody else had this probem and/or has any insight into why the huge backlog?
Thanks -steve-

Yes. I had that replaced but no backlog. They had it in stock.

Steve, Do you know why or what DSC and hill assist has to do with steering sensors? I am curious because my steering went wacko again and I have not seen those faults show up.
Where did these faults show up, on the nav display or on the dealers diagnostic equipment?
Thanks a ton.

steering sensors ??? What do they do? Are they part of Active Steering?

Maybe, but they are also in non active steering cars.

re the steering sensor - I do NOT have active steering. The faults showed up in the iDrive screen (both of them) as well as the 'trouble' icon and the 'brake' annunciator on the dash, and in the HUD. At first my guess was that the ABS had failed, but while driving with the 'brake' light on I certainly noticed more body roll going around curves than normal, so the dealer statements make sense. Why the steering sensor? Got me.
What really alarmed me was the '1500 on backlog' comment. This is clearly a large scale problem iwth this component, not just an infant motality issue. Stay tuned.... -steve-
