 Now what??? 550i ? 650i ?

So I go to the dealer today to check on some things for my incoming 550i (due on 6/10) and they have a Black/Black 650i loaded to the hilt with almost same options (all) as the 550i I have on order - damn it was looking fine. Some guy ordered it and then decided on something else (I can see how these things happen )

So I wouldn't get the ventilated comfort seats, no power sun shades, no split rear seats, and no 4 years of free BMW assist, no donut spare, and no 2007 car.

Also, my 550i is ordered with SMG and the 650i is Step, which didn't seem too bad on the test drive.

Not that any of those might be showstoppers - just trying to sort out the trade offs. The 650 might be a couple of $K higher, but not much and I may be able to get a better deal since it is sitting there - both cars are MAXED out with options.

Apples to Oranges I know - any opinions? That 650i won't sit there long - very nice ride. What to do, what to do.......

Most dealers will not want to get stuck with an SMG.
So unless you use a decoy to negotiate for you it might be tough since they do not want to trade a hot 6 for an SMG 5.

The 550 will be a more comfortable car.

IF you don't have kids and you can get the price close, then go with the 650. What a car. But if you have kids, forget about getting them in that back seat (I brought my kids car seats with me to the dealer and when I put my daughter in the back of the 650 she was like "No Dad, we are NOT getting this car".

550i:
Great size for family members to join you in the BMW experience.
-SMG-tranny is good but if you going to have family members drive with you frequently, step-tranny will be the better choice.
If this is your first BMW and will become the main purpose for transportation.

650i:
Great size for you and 1 passenger. Yes you can have passengers but they have to be petite all-around and the drive should be short distance for back seat comfort purposes.

-SMG-tranny is the best option for the 650i IMO but Step-tranny is equally workable.

Very comfortable ride but you need to consider, answer the question for yourself. Is a Sport Coupe GT what you want to drive at whatever frequency.

So you need to consider this...

Do you want a Sports Sedan or a Sports Coupe GT?

I say get your 2007 550i because that's what you seem to be set on.

Both very fine automobiles.

Some days I do miss the vented seats of my 5er.

But the 6s exhaust note is sooooo much sweeter.

The 5er was a superb road trip car for 4.

The 6 catches looks like Naomi Campbell. And Brad Pitt. Cubed.

The good news is that it's not really possible to make a bad decision.

No kids - just my wife and a small Maltese dog.

My previous car was an M5, before that an M3 convertible and an M3 coupe. I work from home now and put about 5K miles a year on the car.

The sales guy that ordered my 550i for me showed me this car, so doing one or the other will be no big deal - even with sticking them with an SMG 550i - he didn't seem worried about that - and yes, the price is about $2K more for the 650i.

Thanks all for the input - I still have no clue... - but it is a good problem to have, I suppose.
