Is this normal? Hard to desribe this noise but it sounds like some sort of rattling noise(seems to be coming from engine/cockpit side)....(very small, but it sounds like tal tal tal tal tal tal,etc).
1st time I noticed, it got loud enough to a point where I thought there was a news/police chopper around my neiborhood...but this noise has not been that loud ever since.

I've got a '03 e39 that had a what I called a "mechanical cricket". My better half said she thought it was a cricket. It would only appear after the engine started and would vary in it "cricket like" sounds. It would disappear after turning off the key. It has went away on it's own now. I knew that it would do that before I got it to a SA.
Does yours sound like that?

what is SA? I let my dad hear that noise and he said it was perfectly normal...but maybe I am being paranoic...

If you haven't driven the car in a while, it could be the VANOS before it gets enough oil - I had this once or twice in my E39 M5 after leaving it cold for two weeks - sounded like HELL for about 5 minutes - very disconcerting, but apparently normal.
I'd get BMW to check it out though if you always hear it.
