530xi or 530i in NYC area

Seems like most people are getting the xi in NY.

If willing to swap tires out every winter, would 530i be a better option?

I read an article a while back that showed that an all wheel drive vehicle with all season tires went only as well as a two wheel drive vehicle with snows. The two wheel drive with snows stopped quicker also due to the better tires. Obviously all wheel drive with snows is the best, but between traction and stability control and good set of snow tires you should be fine in the 530i. Drive both, if you like the feel of the 530i better, then go for it.

I hear that the 530i is a smoother drive, whereas the xi gives you more road feel.

We don't get an abundance of snow in NYC and when it snows, the roads are cleared quickly. Also, i hear great things about active steering (which is not available on the xi).

Modern traction control devices are unbelievable. I ran 4 wheel snows on my E39 540 MSport and never, ever had 1 bit of trouble. Much, much better than my previous MB's (the last being a C43AMG also with traction control and 4 wheel snows, but no match for the 540). So much so that I didn't hesitate to get a 550 instead of an xi.

I briefly considered the 530i and 530xi, but the thing that killed the xi for me was the lack of sport suspension on the "sport package" (really just shadowline trim and Sport Seats on the '06's).

When you buy your snows, talk to the Tire Rack or another KNOWLEDGABLE source. A smaller diameter wheel (17's instead of 18's) and a narrower tire will give you the best snow traction. Better protection from NYC potholes, too.

Non-x, and Blizzaks, and you'll be a happy camper on just about any road in the US.
