I've got a 2004 E60 530 with Active Steering. My steering wheel is off just a bit towards the 1 o'clock position.
Spoke with the dealer and they said I would need an alignment and that it's about $288 with the Active Steering.
I've seen the threads regarding alignments and steering wheels at the top of the forum, but these seem to all be in relation to the new cars.
For comparison purposes, can other shops perform this service, or is special equipment needed due to the AS? I planned on doing a rotate and balance at the same time. (Dunlop runflats) I'll spend the money to make it right, but don't want to throw money away if there is a perfectly good alternative option available.
Thanks!

Absolutely special equipment is needed due to AS. You may just want them to calibrate your active steering first though, as this doesn't really sound like an alignment issue but an active steering issue instead.

What is involved in the Active Steering calibration?
I had a warning message several months ago about my power steering fluid being low. I took it in and they did some kind of active steering check. (I'll have to look at my paperwork at home for proper terminology) But I was thinking some kind of re-calibration was involved.
I didn't notice the wheel being off right away, but when I did notice, I remembered they performed this service. When I mentioned this to my service advisor, she said that the steering wheel is not affected during the service performed. (again, have to look at home at my paperwork)
FYI: I've got about 30k miles on the car.

I can't recall the exact procedure, but it involves setting it back to where the steering wheel and wheels match-up. I am sure that would be under warranty. I think this was a fairly common problem for older E60's and involved either a software update or replacement of the steering wheel rack.

When I got my car new, I had the same issue. Alignments need to be addressed when you first get you car, not two years later. The dealer is not obligated to fix for free when so much time has elapsed. Cars will go out of alignment over time. Free maintenance does not include tires or alignments. But yes, take it to the dealer to get it done right.
