Last week I took my 530xi--which has just under 1000 miles on it--to the dealer because it was leaking oil. They called me back and said the seal between the engine and the transmission was leaking and they would replace the seal. When they contacted BMW for authorization, BMW told them to replace the entire transmission. The dealer can't explain why BMW decided to replace the entire transmission. Does anyone have an idea why they would want to do an expensive transmission replacement instead of a much cheaper gasket replacement?

It is a seal (on the input shaft), not a gasket. It could be the seal itself, but it could also be the shaft where it contacts the seal. There may be a history of these leaking, not sure. If so, BMW will be paying attention to it so as to find the root cause.
It may be due to the risk of resealing it, and the chance that they might have to go back in again. The labour cost is significant to BMW.
Another possibility is that BMW want the transmission back to see exactly what is leaking, and what the failure mode was.
Whatever the reason, it is to your benefit so just smile and hand them the keys to do it

I seem to have the same problem with my 2007 530xi (1100 miles). Fluid is leaking from the seal between the engine and transmission. The dealer is pulling the transmission tomorrow.
Robert, I'm curious how your transmission replacement worked out. Any further issues? How long did it take the dealer to receive parts and complete the work?
Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Replacing the transmission makes it simpler for BMW. They'd have to remove the transmission no matter what, and replacement beats the hell out of having a dealer tech try to rebuild it.
