Need your expert help here.... I got a low engine coolant warning light on my 2006 525i this morning as I was driving to work... I have put 12,500 miles on it since Aug '05 and seldom use the AC given the unusual cold weather front here in Southern Cal.... Anyone think there might be something else under the hood or should I just refill and go about my own business... Thanks a bunch... |

If iDrive is telling you to put in more coolant, swing by the dealer and they should add it for free....

No biggie...dump a little deionized (my preference) water in the expansion tank. If it is a lot, you might have a leak but normal top-up due to evaporation is common and nothing to worry about.

It normally takes only a cup or 2 to top off the overflow tank. If you do not have any obvious leaks and this only happens once a year or so it must be simple evaporation.

If you add coolant, go to the dealer. I had the same indicator. I found out the dealer uses a special coolant and off the shelf products sold at auto stores is not the same stuff. There is something special about the BMW coolant that does not damage the engine. Not sure what it is or if there is an aftermarket brand that is just as good.

This seems to happen every year or so with BMWs. If only a little low, top off with distilled water. If more, get a bottle of coolant from the dealer (you can't use run of the mill coolant in BMW engines) and mix 50%/50% with distilled water.
