Active Steering M5?
A short time ago I posted a thread asking advice - Get or pass on active steering for my 07 550I. A poster wrote (paraphrasing) that because it isn't offered on the M5 the he would get it (maybe it's telling us something).
I was thumbing through the M5 brochure and came across this: "The Servotronic steering varies its level of assistance for direct, dynamic response at high speed (or in EDC Sport mode), while giving more assistance at low speeds to help make navigating tihgt spaces easier."
I don't know about you...but that sounds like AS (active steering) is standard on the M5.
If that's the case it might be a good thing.
Any thoughts?

Speed sensitive variable assist power steering is nothing new--it's been available on many cars for years, including the non-M 5, 6, and 7 series (although the 2 levels of effort is new with the M5). This is different than AS, which varies the amount of front wheel turn for a given amount of steering wheel turn--a given amount of steering wheel turn (degrees from center) will cause a greater amount of front wheel turn at low speeds, and a lesser amount of front wheel turn at higher speeds.
The M5 also has variable ratio steering, but unlike AS which is variable based on the car's speed, the M5 steering is variable based on how much the steering wheel is turned from center. The steering ratio becomes quicker (greater steering angle relative to steering wheel turns) as the steering wheel is turned away from its center position. The Porsche 997 also uses this type of variable ratio steering.
