Just got a used '98 528i, some questions... (long)

Hope this belongs here and not in the 5 series forum. If not, my bad, please move it.

First post, after test driving lots of cars over the last several weeks I finally decided on a 1998 528i.

My first BMW and I'm loving it The car was bought off a dealer and the vehicle history report showed one owner and no accidents. There are a few issues I'd like to ask regarding a couple minor things with the car:

1. I think my key is screwed up. It works fine to start the car and unlock/lock everything via the physical door lock, but the LED on the key doesn't light up when buttons are pressed and they don't respond. I replaced the battery and I still don't get a the light on the key to respond. I also checked the fuses and the specific one for keyless entry is fine. How much am I looking for to get a new key? Or is there anything else I can check?

2. The trunk release from within the car doesn't work, I press the button and hear the motor attempt to do something but the trunk remains locked. Common issue, quick fix? Checked the fuses on this too.

3. The car didn't come with an owners manual. I've searched but can't find anything for sale online, is there anywhere I can buy one? Or possibly just find a layout of the front radio/climate control buttons (there's a left/right toggle with a fan icon below the climate control display that I can't figure out what it does, it controls a meter on the display, but the meter doesn't seem to affect anything, plus there's some other stuff I want an owners manual for)

Thanks in advance and I hope to be a productive member of this community as I grow in my knowledge of this beautifully driving, awe inspiring piece of machinery.

I don't have any good answers for 1 or 2. I would have said you probably just needed to reinitialize the key, but if you put in a new battery and the LED isn't lighting up, you may need a new key. On the other hand, if you mean that you're pushing the trunk release button on the key (vs. the button inside the car) and you hear the trunk motor making noise, then the LED might just be dead and perhaps reinitializing the key will get everything working correctly again. I kind of doubt it but if you want to try it, here's a link on how to do it. http://www.bmwtips.com/tipsntricks/P...s/ProgKeys.htm

If that doesn't work, maybe someone else has another idea, but keys are approx $140, you need to order it from a dealer and bring proof of ownership. I think I've heard of people just ordering the roundel remote unit though and replacing it on the key without having to order the actual key too. I don't know how that works but it's worth asking about. While you're at the dealership, you might have them deactivate any old keys out there that you didn't get with the car just to be on the safe side.

As for your #3, you can find the entire 2000 owners manual for the 528i on line at the following link and it should be pretty close to yours. http://www.bmwtips.com/OwnersManuals/manuals.htm

Have fun with your new car . . . and welcome!

67 11 8 368 196 Trunk Lid Actuator $56.95

That's the part you need to fix the trunk and you can get it at

My wife and I spent several weeks in Denver this past month. We love your city.

This is just an educated guess but if your key works the locks then it's only the LED that is bad. I don't believe that this is a repairable item so if you really want the LED to light up I think you are going to have to buy a new key. Depending on the dealer I think it's in the range of $125 to $150 so that's a very high price to pay just to see the LED light up. Personally, I don't think it's worth the cost.

You should be able to order an Owner's Guide from your nearest BMW dealer's parts counter.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the replies It seems as if the car is getting more fun to drive every time I get in heh. A few follow up questions though:

1. My brother was driving the car last night and hit a pothole (probably going about 20) anyhow the outside temp display started showing -40 on the OBC. I checked where it should be and sure enough it was dangling around down there. I looked but couldn't find where it's meant to go. Do any of the panels need to be removed to see the connector or do I just need to look harder?

2. Trunk lid actuator - installation...is it difficult to replace this to get the trunk release working?

Thanks again for all the replies, the owners manual helped out on quite a few fronts.
