has anyone experineced the wearing out of run flat tires after 12-14k of driving. if so, that is yet another strike against them. 1) noisier, rougher riding 2) very expensive to replace 3) if it is true that they wear out fast--that is not good...just curious..

I had a 2004 545-My first set wore bare (rear ones) at 22,000 miles. My second set at 22,000 miles, could have gone another 4000 miles or so. These were Dunlops and did give a rough ride. I just traded for a 2007 550i with Bridgestone run flats and it is smooth as ever. Of course, it might be the updated car.

Yes, it's a common problem. The Dunlops seem to be the worst. Quick wear, noise, bit of a shimmy.

Even on my 530i, my second set of Michelin Pilot Primacy tires (OEM tires, first set were nice so...) died on me at 12k and I was furious at having to dump $700 on tires at Christmas time! ho ho ho The key, if you can, is to rotate, rotate, rotate. Do it every 5k miles at the minimum. More if you can stand it.

why wont people admit that these things suck? there are so many problems associated with them. the cons seem to outweigh the pros...

Is it possible to order the sport package (on 07 models) with better run flat/non-flat tyres and pay the difference between the standard ones and the new ones, in addition to sport package upgrade cost
It looks like run flats have lot of issues. Supposedly, their main advantage is safety when you run into a flat situation but I guess I can live with standard tyres and do away with greater risk, since flat tyre situations are rare. I have had 1 such situation in 10 years
