M5's lack of low end torque makes it sluggish off the line. I wouldn't be suprised that 550i has better response off the line. Once rolling M5 is a beast because the pull never ends way past triple digit. This is where 550i and M5 differs.
As far as consumption goes. I give credit to CNN.
Even when i took the beast down to Santa Barbara from bay area. Driving as gently as possible in 400HP. I averaged just 17.7 mpg (going between 70 to 75 and always in 7th gear- i will admit that i did race a E39 on the way down for about half mile).
Daily driving in 400HP mode is about 12 to 13 mpg. 500HP mode, I am lucky if i can get it close to 9mpg.

Yep, a majority of my cash last week was spent in one day filling the M6 twice.
