 Fuel Tank Leak

Hi all. has anybody had a problem with leaking tanks? I had a leak where the filler neck and the tank join with the rubber boot to stop the main leak but I can still smell fuel when I open the boot. There must be some kind of vent to atmosphere but I cannot see the pipe to check it over. I dont think its the tank as I can only smell the fuel in the boot when I open it? Ive checked all the tank as best as I can without taking it off and looks to be in good condition. Any ideas anybody?

Many thanks

I'm going to make a few quick assumptions:

1) Your tank does not vent to the atmosphere, but to some sort of Recirculation system... in the old days, this often consisted of a charcoal canister (usually hidden in a wheel well) that would recirculate the fumes back into the tank... if the line for the recirc unit has been cut, abraded or otherwise disconnected from the tank, you may have the source of your smell...

2) Your tank is not plastic... if it is, it still may have a crack in it... if it's steel, it may be rusted... also, if its steel, it may have an access plate for the fuel sender, which may have a bad gasket, leading to the fuel smell in your trunk...

Final suggestion, you could pull the tank and have it pressure tested for cracks or rust pinholes (if its steel)... the tank on my old Chevy S-10 pick-up truck actually used to weep gas through the rust on the tank, until finally a pin hole emerged where one could see the tank dripping gas... does the outside of the tank have any gas residue at its lowest point? Hope these ideas help!
