 Break In period 550

Is there a break in period and if so what is it?

I am going with the standard 1000 Miles but I can't wait to
open it up on the road! I am at 650 miles right now...

Just want to Gun it.. but i don't think i should...

How long did you guys wait before flooring it?!?!

Not to be a d*ck, but we all read our owners manuals. Start there . . .

I build engines, and see it both ways.

The manual is probably the best way, but I have seen rebuilt engines "driven-like-you-stole-it" last quite a while to.
Today's manufacturing tolerances are light years ahead of even 20 yrs ago.

Personally just do whatever YOU feel comfortable with.

The manual says to keep it under 4500 rpm and 100 mph for the first 1200 miles. It also says to very your speed and rpm, so cruise control might be a bad idea.

Thanks, but a simple "Check your manual" would have gotten the same message across without sounding like a complete d*ck.

there are 3 schools of thought (as far as i know) on how to break in engines...

1) drive like granny
2) drive like you stole it
3) drive normal

what i tend to do is somewhere in between 2 and 3 and here are my reasons.

every surface on the engine needs to mate to its partner surface. much like brakes and their pads, the rings need to seat onto the cylinder walls. how do we set brake pads? we drive to 45 and do a few 45-5mph brakes HARD.

in any case, the actual pressure that seats the rings to the walls is created by the pressures within the combustion chamber itself. this means that the "harder" you drive, the "harder" the rings are being pressed against the cylinder walls.

in my opinion, a new engine needs a mix of decent revs under load as well we lots of vacuum during the initial period. vacuum will suck the rings onto the walls and do other good things im too lazy to explain.

so my advice: drive normal, do quick bursts to 5k every once ina while, and spend a lot of time in vacuum

Abe
