BMW Keyless Entry System Hacked!
I found a couple of interesting articles online describing how some high-tech thieves are using wireless computers to break into cars with keyless entry systems, such as BMWs. In fact the article describes how some thieves in Spain were able to steal David Beckham's X5 BMW using such a device. Interesting read. I would hope that BMW is working on fixing this hack!

Reading the links you provided makes me wonder if this 'hack' requires a physical connection to the car ("jack into the car's PC") as a one-time deal (to break encryption for all such cars?) or every time (once physcally inside the car, and connected to the car's systems the encryption can be broken, car started, etc. just like you have the real key).
Will be VERY interested to hear more on ths.
btw, this is why the BEST security systems have their architecture peer reviewed and/or open sourced (like PGP) because their security comes NOT from keeping their tricks secret (which will eventually be exposed) but by rigorus engineering that keeps only the PRIVATE KEY (assigned individually for each car/system by/for the owner) SECRET. (imho with my sw engineering background designing a hotel electronic lock system in the past). -steve-
