Rings and Valves
Has anybody had any problems with the piston rings or the valves wearing or not seating properly on a 318i 1988 E30? Compression is a bit low and car seems to lack power. Under load it judders like its missing on one cylinder and seems to miss when cruising but not as bad. Checked for air leaks, cracks, ICV ect, all fine and ive changed more critical components. Any ideas anybody?
Many Thanks

| | Reply » Rings and Valves | Do a leak down compression test. That will tell you what is leaking. Hissing in the intake means intake valve problems. Hissing in the exhaust is exhaust vavle problems. Hissing out the oil filler cap is ring problems.
Might also be ignition problems, froma bad wire, bad spark plug, etc.
Could be a bad/dirty fuel injector.

Give it a couple of minutes and away you go, seems like a heat and time related problem whuich worries me more as its probably internal, like a valve which would explain a few things. Done all the usual tests, all seems ok

Cold start stalling tends to be something wrong with te enrichment circuit, cold engines need a richer mixture than warm/hot engines. NOT valves or rings.
