SMG Transmission
So... what is SMG transmission. I know that there is a 6 speed manual(stick), an auto with steptronic, and whta else? How does the Smg transmission work. Is it that paddel shifting at the sterring wheel? Is it comparable to manual transmisison, or is it just another tiptronic transmission with the computer taking over if you puch the car too hard. Also, the steptronic transmission, how do you use it. Do you use the shifter to change gears or is there a pedel, since it is called STEPTRONIC.

| | Reply » SMG Transmission | thanks, that cleared up a lot. So, the smg is just a manual, but the clutch is computerized so you dont have to use one. That is stupid, why nogt just get a manual. You get an auto if you want the smoth feeling and the comfort of the ride. If you get the stick or smg, you know that the ride is a little jerky and more agressive than the auto. No offense, but I would have gotten the stick. Im sure the Smg is nice, but it sounds too much like steptronic.

The steptronic has delay in shifting...the SMG is nearly instant...and even faster than a manual! Read a little more before you bash it, please.

Quote: shift times with auto 335i: 100ms 550i: 200ms
shift times with smg 550i: ****s m3 (mode 1through5) :****s m3 (mode 6) :75ms... ferrari f430: 90ms (f1 type gearbox)
the 335i has the quickest auto box bmw has ever designed | I still like my SMG though!
| | Reply » SMG Transmission | I don't believe it. The automatic when in step mode has a helluva lot longer shift delay than 100-200 ms. The SMG's shifts are much, much quicker. I guess I'll find out for myself in September....
