After driving a M3 for a year, I realized that I need a bigger and more comfortable car. My local dealer has a 04 545i w/ sport and prem package w/ 16000 miles and 03 745i w/ 39000 miles. The 545 is selling for $46000 and $42900 for the 745. I know this is a 5 series forum but based on the price, which car is worth it to purchase in terms of the long run and depreciation after 2 to 3 years. Thanks for the help.

It's hard to compare apple with banana, but in terms of depreciation, 7 definitely slides down faster than 5. BMW 3 and 5 are the best value-holding luxo cars in the entire pre-own market.
In addition, if driving excitement is more important to you, go for 5. If image is more important to you, no doubt 7 brushes your "elite" image better, especially if you live in an image-sensitive place like NY City or LA.

The 5 will provide you moderate luxury and sport performance from a midsize sedan.
--> Has every thing you need in terms of space, luxury and performance.
The 7 will provide you top-line luxury an sport performance in a largesize luxury-sedan.
--> Yes the 7 has the status and it should being BMW's Flagship Vehicle.
--> Much more space.

Drive them both and you'll know exactly which one is for you.
My vote is for the 7.

Both cars could be problematic- there were lots of problems early on in the platform life-cycles for both the current 5 and 7.
