 Extended warranty and Maintenance

I originally placed the following post in the Ask-the-dealer section, but realize that I really am not trying to solicit bids from dealers, but rather look for input from other members who are pleased (or not pleased) with the prices/terms of their extended warranties.

Hi All,

Hope this type of post is permissible:

I am deliriously happy with my 2006 ED 530xiT and have had no problems so far. But, I know that it is time to get real and purchase some piece of mind (as if I have any left ).

I am only interested in warranties from BMW, not third-party.

Please post or PM, if interested, or if you have any references for me.

Thanks for a great forum!

Well, you are all set for the next 4 years from the day you picked up your car (or 50k miles, which ever is first). If you plan to keep it (and you never know, you might be itching for the smell of a nice new car), you have quite a while before plunking down the change to extend the warranty through BMW.

If you are curious, check with your dealer and ask them what he want to extend your warranty. Check with several dealers...I can almost guarantee that they all will be different for the exact same warranty.

If you buy now, be sure the warranty is transferrable to a new owner. Buying now could lock in a price that most likely may only increase in the future. The warranty should enhance the price of the vehicle should you choose to sell it later.

Personally, I thought I would be someone who kept a vehicle for 6-7-8 years but I'm finding that isn't true. Yes, I've had the 530i since March, 2001, and will sell it end of this year/beginning of next, but I should have dumped it a lot sooner and gotten a new car sooner.

check with your dealer .
Yes, I did that when I purchased the car, but they only sell third-party warranties and I've had some bad experiences with those. Since I would not be getting it from my own dealer (who I would ordinary try to give the business to), I figured that I might as well price it out, and try to get a discount, if possible.

Locking in the price - that's actually why I am looking now instead of waiting. I agree that having the warranty as a selling point would be particularly good for me since I went with my heart and not my head when selecting color (olivine green) - which I am so happy with, BTW.

I think I might be of the same mind as you, but apropos the above comment, I have always found that selling a car with a warranty, even when the car is relatively new, gives the buyer a feeling of confidence. It has always served me well.

Thanks for taking the time to comment.

Interesting that the BMW dealer isn't offering a BMW extended warranty! BMW extended warranties have been offered in the past....

I agree, however, with 3rd party extended warranties...stay far, far away from them. The one I have on my 530i is having its assets liquidated...

Although I don't have an "in the past" like you (this is my first BMW) I was surprised, too. My dealer sells a warranty policy from JM &A, or something like that. I seem to recall that they did offer BMW extended maintenance, however.

Glad to see someone else out who likes the Olivine Green. I just order my 2007 525xi in Olivine Green and I'm anxiuosly awaiting it;'s arrival by the end of May. Living in Chicago, there are tons of Black, Silver & Grey 5 Series everywhere, but I'll have one of the few olivine green ones...

I don't think that the extended warranties make sense with the 4 years that is already provided. I usually keep my cars 4-5 years before trading.
