I just called BMW to check on my production status, and they said that my 530xi is in the Body Shop and should be completed on Friday. Does anyone have any idea what happens in the Body Shop?

They train future body shop mechanics to take out the dents they delibrately put into the car. Not all cars get this treatment. You have to be special. I think they give preference to people living in the upper midwest who might be of scandinavian descent (competition with Volvo you see). They also like to poke fun at lawyers, just to get even. And professors are a prime target for all the hours of lectures and labs the BMW engineers have to endure.
Since you are close to hitting 1.0, I am not surprised that your car is getting the special body shop treatment.

You're car only takes a few days to make. It starts in the body shop, where it is painted and the powder clear coat is applied.

How did you know that I am of Swedish descent? | I hate to break the news to you but as soon as you registered on bimmerfest, a daemon ran on your computer and got all information about you. Once you reach a 100 posts, you can see everything about every person on the fest. And folks who are getting a nice car for turning 50, need to be especially careful....
Just kiddin.
I just took a guess at that Scandinavian thingy. I went to school in Champaign Illinois and read up a bit about the history of folks who first settled in Big Ten Country. And typically, people from the coast, do not enjoy the midwest that much, so the chances of finding some one local is much higher than the other way round.
And as some one already wrote: The body-shop is just one of the stages in the production process. And each car is custom made. You should take a factory tour if you get a chance to go to Germany. Or better still, join the Euro Delivery bandwagon and enjoy the savings too !
And get the plate, it is nice.
