Help = Radar detector causing problems?!

Just got a new 2006 550i -- turned on brand new radar detector and all of a sudden had major problems -- got an "SOS System Failure error" -- could not hear any audio from FM, AM, Satellite, etc -- voice activation stopped working. Had to shut off radar ,completely shut down car and wait 5 minutes -- then everything was fine. Did not try to turn radar detector back on. Any advice?

What brand of radar detector? How was the radar detector powered (batteries or direct connect to the car's power)?

It is a cordless (battery) Escort Solo S2. Had it up by the rear view mirror.

Thanks for your help!

Try these scenarios:

(1) With the car off/detector off, turn the detector on and then try the car. You may wish to let the detector be on for a few seconds so it gets to its normal state.
(2) With the car running/detector off, get out of the car with the detector and walk several feet away and turn the detector on and then walk back to the car.
(3) Assuming the above are fine (and I expect they will be), hopefully you have a radio somewhere outside of your car. Select any AM station and with the detector close to the radio/antenna, flip it off and on. AM radios are excellent at picking up radiated noise and modulating it so you can hear it on the radio's speakers.

What I'm wondering about is if there is some strange surge emission from the turn-on of your detector that somehow interfere's with the car.

I would try turning on the detector again while in the car with the car running and see what happends. See if it is repeatable. I doubt any serious damage will happen.

What we are trying to do is to make sure your radar detector is, indeed, the source of the problem and we are trying to nail down when it is a problem (i.e. when first turned on).

If it still causes interference to the car, return the detector and see if you can get a new one and try the same thing.

Oh, one other thing, make sure the detector has fresh batteries. Older batteries could be causing some erratic behavior in the detector.

Thanks for the tips. Before I got your message, I went out to my car and tried the radar detector again -- and this time had no problems at all. I will see how it does over the next couple of days. Will let you know what I find. Thanks again!!

Since it's a battery operated detector, I suspect it may have been a coincidence that you had the gremlins right after you installed it. Others have had similar gremlins.
