 Real life MPG for xi/xiT

Hi,
what are people getting for real life MPG on the 5 seriesw xi and xit ?

(i am looking 3 series....but as the the EPA is the same for 3 and 5 series on non xi models, I think this will be good indicator)

many thanks

I have driven 2000 miles so far in my 530Xi and I am getting like 26mpg on highway and around 22 while in my local drives

With almost 3K miles on mine, my best highway was a little over 26mpg and all around average (from the instrument cluster) is 25. I suspect true local mileage is around 21-22. Most of my miles are pretty much highway except for the routine traffic jams around Washington.

I have just passed 1200 miles with the 530xit and have taken several 300 (rt) mile trips downhill to Grand Junction and back on I-70. Gas mileage going downhill with the A/C, speeds between 60 and 80 (mostly closer to the higher end) the Car data showed 31 mpg. Coming back uphill under the same conditions, the numbers were just over 28 mpg. Since 99% of my daily commute is a short interstate trip, my day-to-day numbers so far have been around 26-27 mpg. Very impressive, especially so when compared to my old allroad which rarely did better than 23 mpg on anyroad.

I am really looking forward to these numbers getting better as the engine breaks in.

I just received the latest issue of Consumer Reports (Oct. 05) and they talk about how the EPA's testing for the mpgs you find on all stickers on our cars is far from reality and that the EPA's estimates can be as much as 50% TOO HIGH! This and gas skyrockeing...sigh....

To site a couple of cars from page 20:

BMW 745Li: EPA city mpg is 18, CR city mpg is 11 diff of 39%
Jeep Liberty Diesel Ltd. 4WD: EPA city mpg is 22, CR city mpg is 11 diff of 50%!

The basically state that the way the EPA establishes mpgs is no where close to real life. The EPA uses 55/45 percent formula city/highway ratio to calculate combined fuel economy when most autos today spend about 62% of their annual miles in city traffic, where fuel economy is worse.

Anyway, there are all sorts of implications to this proposed in the article. Try and read it if you can. Very interesting....
