My car has developed an intermittent grinding/creaking noise (slight associated vibration felt thru steering wheel) when steering wheel is turned through more than c30 degrees revolution (this noise is entirely different from the groaning noise one gets when steering is on full lock).
Seems to happen after car has been driven for a while ... happens when turning left and right. Also I have noticed it when driving up a multi-story car park.
Irritatingly, the phenomenon can't be replicated on demand ... particularly when driving with a BMW chief technican.
Could it be the power steering filter? Maybe I have air or dirt contaminating the system?
Any advice please? Search of the BMW intranet has not come up with anything apparently.

Thanks for the link Spartacus, glad your problem has been resolved.
By the sound of things, my steering wheel creaking noise is different. I once had an MGB GT which had a similar steering column noise ... but that was copper filings shearing off something in the column ... and mechanically rubbing and making the noise ... which makes me wonder if my current problem is a contaminant, such as air or dirt on the steering lubricant .. the same but different.
Any thoughts on this? Thanks very much.

charles, any resolution to your steering problem? Mine has developed sort of a chatter while turning. intermittent.
