 Torn: '04 530i -or- '06 525i

Hi All-

Was getting oil changed at the dealer today and browsed for the 04 530i I've been looking for. The salesguy brought up the option of a 2006 525i for about the same price. 13k miles vs. ~20k on most of the 04 530's I've looked at. I was sure I wanted the 530 for the engine- but he pointed out that the 06's have the 3.0L in both- but tweaked the 530 for more HP in 06. The 525 now has over 200HP.

I want to get CPO, which is offered for the 06 at time of purchase. (as are the 04's) It's a not-yet titled dealer service loaner. (10 months in-service)

Another perk is that the 06's have 2.9% financing. And standard Dakota Leather w/ the PP.

Anyone have any opinions on 530- '04 vs. 525 '06? I was all set to shop and now I'm reconsidering. I'm a little scared of the idea of getting a former loaner vehicle. Imagining 100 different drivers... not caring what they did to the car.

Comments and votes in the poll above are appreciated!

Thanks!

MORE important then '04 530 vs '06 525 is the fact that the '06 525 was a loaner. You can count on the fact that it was smoked in and leadfooted. I would NEVER buy a service loaner. Period.

Ah, yeah . . .DON'T EVER BUY A LOANER, they are beat on constantly. The car is probably 7 years old in "loaner years". Both choices kinda suck . . .hunt around and get a new 06 525i at a reasonable price.

That's kind of what I was afraid of. Unfortunately I'm not really seeing any other 06 525's in the area that even come close on price/pkg. Most of them are $7-10k over what the one I found was priced at.

Lots of people voting for 06 525- but everyone that commented so far thinks I should run the other way. What gives?

Well, the loaner is a tough thing to overlook but one good thing is that it could be CPO'ed and you'll be covered for a good long while despite how it may have been treated and 2.9% is nearly free!

Inspect it thoroughly, check the interior and exterior VERY carefully. The 525i is the lowest HP/Torque engine offered in the 5-series so it may not been as hot-rodded as you might think.

Ask for 1-2k lower on the '06 and see if they bite. 13k in 10 months is a fair amount of miles on that car and it *is* a loaner.

Good Luck!
