I took my car in for a first set of minor warranty items this AM. During the process, I asked that they update to the latest CIP (based on all the print here on the forum suggesting same). The shop foreman said, "I can't do that without charging you. It takes ALL DAY and somebody has to pay for it. BMW won't pay me to do it unless there's a specific problem that needs to be corrected with the latest CIP."
Is this correct???

Correct, they don't just update the progman (formerly called CIP) because you ask.
I takes a few hours, or much longer if they run into problems. Most of the time is the SW downloading to the car, so it's not like the tech is tied up on your car the whole time.

Same here, usually you are charged for this service.

Is this correct??? | If you really want the latest CIP upgrade, tell them that your iDrive is going blank for no apparent reason. You will not be charged. And I'll see you at bimmerfest Saturday!

Here are some good reasons for a free CIP upgrade:
1. Audio Switches off Briefly when Listening to FM Stations (Supercedes Dec 05 w/new info) 2. RDS Function Causes Confusing Station Names when in "All stations" Screen - This is actually happening to me. I'm waiting for now to take it in. I just turned off RDS in the meanwhile. 3. Hands free Bluetooth® Phone Call May be Lost if a Call Waiting Call is Received 4. Nav Displays incorrect Vehicle Position - This happened to me. Was fixed with my last CIP upgrade.
All these are valid reasons why a CIP upgrade is needed and the dealer will not charge you. There is quite a lot more. If you want to find all the rest of the reported problems you can do a search for "Service Bulletins". or "SIBs." Usually, cobradav provides these bulletins. You can try and ask him for the latest SIB. Good luck.

As mentioned, you just need a reason for the upgrade and you won't be charged. It does make sense. If you are not having problems, why upgrade you for free?
