SMG Issues
This is related to the SMG thread in the 3-series forum (http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=111011), but I wanted to post here and see how may e60 owners with SMG have had similar issues (I know the overall population with this configuration is pretty small).
Symptoms are: 1) Insert key into igntion, drive indiator in dash says 1 (as it should since car was left in gear as per the BMW manual) 2) Depress brake, shift stick to N and try to start car 3) Dash indicator says gear still in 1st, although stick indicator says N 4) Car will not start and will do one of a couple of things (depending on whim it seems) - Warn you to switch to N before trying to start car, no other errors - Say there is a Transmission Fault and to only use R,N,1-3
Today is the 2nd time this has happened to me. The first time I was lucky as the SMG "reset" itself after 15min. I tried for about an hour today with no luck (car is being towed to dealer right now).
I'm serioiusly hoping this is not a transmission pump issue as detailed in the 3 series thread linked above. Any other 5'ers out there with similar issues?
| | Reply » SMG Issues | I have noticed that this problem does not happen if you have your foot on the brake when you go from D/R to N.
| | Reply » SMG Issues | It sounds like you need to stop by the dealer and get a software update. You have one of the earlier SMG and I have to assume you haven't run into a glitch 'til now.
Give your dealer a holler
| | Reply » SMG Issues | I have had no such problems. It has operated flawlessly. I am only in my first 100 miles of operation
| | Reply » SMG Issues | I never had the problem the OP described, but since this thread is about SMG issues, I think I'll chime in.
The only one problem I've encountered so far (~5500 miles) is this one time I was able to shift from 1 to N, left it at N for a few seconds, and then shifted from N to 1 without pressing on the brake. It's never happened again since.
| | Reply » SMG Issues | After towing to dealer (this was quite interesting to see as the rear axle was locked with the car stuck in gear), they said it was in fact a faulty pump which they will replace. Still curious about difference between 3 and 5 series SMG (if any). According to the previously mentioned thread, the transmission pump cannot be replaced without replacing the whole tranny.
And I did have a previous SMG issue that was seemingly corrected by a software update. A couple of times the car shifted into N while driving (at LA highway speeds) - and then I could not shift back into gear. Actually had to stop the car, turn it off, remove the key and restart before it would reset. And let me tell you... not too much fun merging to the shoulder on the 405 in heavy traffic with no acceleration.
