  SMG stuck in Reverse... Help

 SMG stuck in Reverse... Help

I noticed the last couple of weeks that when I
got into my 330Ci (SMG TRanny) I would start the car
then move the shifter into 1st, but the
tranny would not go into 1st ( Display showed N )

I shut off the Car and tried again, still nothing,
sometimes I would get an ERROR Message, but
finally it went into 1st...

Well last night I backed into my driveway and left
the tranny in Reverse...

This morning I went to start the car, but since
the tranny was in Reverse, I could not, so I moved
the shifter from R to N, but the Display says R,
it not going into Neutral..

I tried 100 times, and got an ERROR Message many times,

I disconnected the Battery, hoping it would reset something,
but no luck, the tranny is stuck in Reverse...

Anyone have a Clue how to get it in to Neutral ?

It is funny how some things go. I was just thinking that I might post a little update on our little SMG saga when I came across your post.

We own a 04 330ci with SMG and I have posted some of our tale of "woe and intrigue" here in the past. We have experienced the problems you are having but have been lucky and avoided being stranded. Your repeated attempts at moving the shift lever back and forth may eventually cause the transmission to shift. However, the trans may shift and the indicator will not show it. Listen carefully and even if you don't hear anything try the key anyway and it may start as ours has. Then get yourself to the dealer. At minimum you probably have an electrical problem. Our car has exhibited all manner of the sort of problems you describe along with several others. One of the first things done for us was replacement of all the transmission relays with "updated" units as directed by a TSB. On another occasion after an episode much like the one you describe the dealer discovered an electrical short in one of the transmission wiring harness connectors. It was repaired, but we are still having problems. At least one person posting here (or it maybe on another forum I read regularly) reported his SMG "stuck" and required a new transmission. Another required a new wiring harness.

There is a real problem with these transmission systems and the service mgr at our dealer told me just last week quote: "BMW recognizes that there is a problem but they have yet to develop a solution." After I told him that this was unacceptable and that we would shortly be seeking to have the car bought back he admitted that we were not the only dissatisfied owners he was contending with. In fact he said one of his own SAs was among them.

Meanwhile our car remains drivable and the problems though less frequent are still there. We have taken to keeping a log. I am also in touch with BMW NA and if we can't make something happen in the next month or so we are going to pursue a buy back.

Good Luck and let us know how you make out.

Well I called the Dealer, and they said they would come out to my house
and see if they could get it out of Reverse.

The Lead Tech arrived with a Laptop type Computer and with it he was
somehow able to get it back to Netural...

They flatbed towed the car to the dealership to look into this problem.

6 hrs later they called and said it seems to be working fine, they cant
duplicate the problem... They kept the car over night.

Today they called and said the same thing, It's working perfectly...

They did mention that it could be a Relay or the Pump. (If its
the pump the whole transmission would need to be replaced.)

They were told by someone, maybe a Regional BMW Service Manager
not to change anything yet, just reprogram the computer, making sure
its up to date and not corrupted.

They hope it dont happen again, but if it does, they want me to call them
and they will come out to where I get stuck (Hopfully my driveway) and
see if they can determine if its the Relay or the Pump..

I was satified with this, as it is a wierd problem, and if they just change
parts it might not solve anything...

I'll keep you posted...

BTW: My '04 330Ci only has 12500 miles on it

I wonder if you are parked on an incline and not using your ebrake(setiing it tight before you release foot brake). Could be hard for the SMG to engage when the cars weight is on the driveline.
