 530i Currently in Production

I placed an order last week for my 530i (Monaco blue, black leather, etc.), which is currently in production. The dealer requested I put down $1,000 when I ordered it. My question is regarding the total cost of the car. Is there any room for negotiating when you have had a car built to your specifications? Or must you pay the full MSRP? I will be paying cash for my car but would still like the best deal possible.

By the way, my brother in Denver ordered an M3 and an X5 a few years ago and had to pay MSRP on both. He says they will not negotiate at all when you've ordered a vehicle.

I know members of Bimmerfest are really "in the know" and wonder if you have any suggestions for me.

Thank you so much!!

My car was ordered for European Delivery, and I had a lot of room for negotiation. Ordered USA cars are also negotiatble. The "S" in MSRP stands for "Suggested".

From what I know, here is where you have the most to least negotiation power:

1. Cars that do not come out of allocation - Most ED cars (typical exclusions are M and 6 series models)
2. Cars that are sitting on the showroom floor not in high demand
3. Cars that you order that are not in high demand
4. Cars that are sitting on the showroom floor that are in high demand
5. Cars that you order that are in high demand

So, I think you have some wiggle room. The key is - do the deal BEFORE you order. Once you have ordered, your only negotiation tactic is to walk to another dealer and re-order the car. Is your deposit refundable?

If your deposit is refundable, you could wait until the car gets here, then try and renegotiate, with the walk option. But, I don't think this approach is ethical, and if the dealer refuses, you need to re-start the whole order process with another dealer.

Bottom line - talk to your dealer ASAP about a firm price.

I guess I really messed up by ordering without negotiating first. I did not sign anything stating the price of the car, though. I really thought I'd negotiate when I came in to pay the rest. The deposit is pretty much non-refundable unless there is death involved, and there is only one BMW dealership in this part of the state, so unless I want to travel a few hours away to buy a car (which I don't), I've got to stick with them.

I wasn't sure about OK law, but here in CA, the deposits are fully refundable, by law.

You can always by non-locally, and just do all the paperwork by phone/courier. A lot of dealers will do that - plus ship the car to you. A few board sponsors, like Adrian, are expert at this.

You mentioned that you haven't negotiated a price - but then is nothing in writing? Does this mean that the dealer can charge OVER MSRP. I'd contact them asap. You may be able to get your deposit back - that is not a blank check.

Perhaps you can contact them and say, I've been reading that a fair price over invoice is $1,500 or $2,000 on an ordered car - that is what you're giving me, right? Also be wary of dealer fees that are not mandated by law (like doc fees).

Good Luck!

My ED is coming up on 5.11 and my car just hit "Scheduled for Production".
I have an appt with my CA at the dealership on 4.10 to work out the details (nego and sign papers).
I ordered the car with the dealer in Jan and have not given them 1 cent...but I have bought a handful of vehicles from the same dealer/CA.

I ordered my 550i with no deposit required and they gave me $3000 off MSRP.
