run flats
my friend has an 06 530 with sport package and active steering. he picked his car up in munich two weeks before me last may. he just encountered what he thught was a flat tire on the way to the airport. due to the run flats, he made his flight. when he returned from the trip and took it into the dealer they said there was indeed no flat tire but they didnt like the way the tires were wearing and that the tread had "come off" the tire. he proudly told me how the dealer offered to replace all 4 tires ($1600) worth at theitr cost. 1) anyone heard of anything like this occuring with run flats with 12-14k on them? 2) all you sport package hot shots still think runflats are the way to go, or are you ready to cry uncle and admit the truth? THEY SUCK.

Seriously, I think that run flats are an interesting technology but perhaps unnecessary in the 550i. Yet, I find the concept compelling, and the ride quality is firm, no doubt, but not abusive.
Is there anyone out there who has swapped out the run flats for a conventional performance tire, and noticed a huge difference in ride? Remember, I'm looking for a real tangible difference, and not a "placebo" effect.
A tire specialist told me that runflats have such a stiff sidewall that they make turn in almost instantaneous. That makes handling even quicker, and perhaps why they offer it on the sport package. He told me that NASCAR race cars have similar traits, and that's why the feed back to the steering wheel seems to result in constant chatter from the road surface. Essentially, there is no flex in the sidewall, so since vibration is not absorbed at the tire/rim, it translates through the steering. Some call this feedback, some think its disconcerting. Your call. But I think the run flat thing is interesting. Most importantly, I think it's very comforting that you could travel at high speed with this car with your family, and be comforted by the fact that the tires shouldn't blow out on you . . .

................... Is there anyone out there who has swapped out the run flats for a conventional performance tire, and noticed a huge difference in ride? Remember, I'm looking for a real tangible difference, and not a "placebo" effect. ................. | There are a bunch of e60 owners who switched out of the RFTs over in e60.net including myself. My reason was because I went and got the OEM style 166 rims which only comes in 19" (I know that you can get replicas in 18".) That meant I had to get new tires. I must say, the ride seems to be a lot better with the convential tires and the car seems lighter. Dunno if its a placebo or not. Count me as a convert from RFT to non-RFT. BTW, I hand my original RFTs replaced my the dealer @14K miles.
