 Mac and PC, Airport question...

Heya people.

Got a question for you network people

Does anyone know if it's possible to connect a PC (as in "IBM-compatible) to Apple's AirPort base station via ethernet?

And will that particular base station share it's internet connection with a PC connected that way?

So far, it doesn't. I've also got a mac, which talks to the base station wirelessly, and it works perfectly.

Funny thing is, when I set up the base station to "distribute ip addresses: share single IP via DHCP/NAT", not only that old pc doesn't get any 'net, my mac gets cut off too

I'm lost. Please help a fellow bimmer/macer

I have the old Airport, so it doesn't have the WAN connection, but I've never had a problem with it and DHCP over the wireless (though it normally runs static and fully locked down) to a PC. In fact, I don't even own a Mac, and its probably worked better than other APs I've set up.

Do you have another device on the network that's doing NAT or doling out DHCP?

If you have more than a couple of bits of equipment you might want to diagram the stuff out so that you don't have some odd loop or conflict ot something someplace.

Um...diagrams...
I know this is not what you meant, but here goes anyhow

No, I don't have anything else networked.
I've just came across a post on macworld.org forums where a guy says he has a similar set up and it works wonders. So I'm left thinking that something is wrong with my settings. That's expected

What surprises me, though, is that when I set up ABS to distribute ip's, my mac looses it's access to 'net. Why's that?

Another thing, whan I turn my mac off completely, so that IP sharing is not an issue, my PC still gets no luck. So, what PC settings I'm supposed to use? It's Win98 box, btw.

Grrrrr...

The only thing I could think of offhand that could cause all the above problems is that neither the Mac or PC are set up to use DHCP (which is what 'distribute IP addresses' does)

You need to make sure both machines' TCP/IP are set up to use DHCP or "Automatic Addressing"

My mac is definitely set to DHCP.

I'm not sure about winbox, the only option there that mentions DHCP is in WINS tab, "use DHCP for WINS resolution" or something like that.

As for winbox, might it be the case that I need a cross-over (or whatever it's called) cable to connect PC and base station? Just a thought. If it is, it still doesn't explain why my Mac won't work with the router set to distribute ips

I'm not exactly sure what the 'Distribute IP Addresses' does other than turn NAT on the LAN side. The windoze box just needs to be set to 'Obtain IP Address Automatically' to enable DHCP and you don't have to (or want to) mess with anything else. It should just use a single DHCP pool on both WLAN and LAN sides so there shouldn't be a problem with one side kicking anything off the other.
