I am planning to take sport package in my 5 series. I am wondering whether I should also be taking active steering. Does it make a big difference in driving experience? Does it make it a lot more fun to drive?

IMHO you should take it. It makes driving and turning a breeze. However some ppl really hate it so go to a local dearler and try it out.

Isn't active steering a glorified version of power steering with some more frills? What is a typical driving condition/pattern encountered frequently where active steering would be great to have?
I do understand it makes parking easier but that it not very important for me

I love how I can turn the car 90 degrees at an intersection by turning the wheel with one hand turn as opposed to turning it with 3. (My Infiniti I30t). Also, suppose you are driving slowly in your neighborhood, some kid runs out to the street in front of you, it'd be much easier to avoid hitting the kid with a quick turn of the wheel as oppossed to turns of the wheel.
It's all personal preference. My buddy loves it on his 545i. Some people hate it.

I had it on my 545i and I have to be honest, I didn't even really notice it until I read about it in the manual!!
When I started paying attention, I did find it to be quite handy in the tight parking garages in Europe.
However, that said, I am not planning to pony up 1k to get it on my '07 E60.
