I've had my 550i now for 2 weeks, and I love it.
But when I drive on the highway, it doesn't seem to have any weight on center so that it stays the course with my hands off the wheel. Is it just me, or do others out there constantly feel like they have to dial in small corrections to keep the car straight.
My steering wheel is a click tilted to the right when the wheels are straight. Maybe it's my perception from that. All I know is that it's irritating as hell since the car should have been checked for this stuff upon delivery. Gotta get it straightened.

Yup, it was the SZL (steering angle/position sensor). I got the recall notice, and got the sensor replaced yesterday. Now, the car is tight with the steering being properly weighted. NO more floatly feel. No more vagueness. Also, the wheel is straight as an arrow.
Totally different car. | Lucky you.

The two separate BMW dealerships to whom I've taken my 530xi have looked at me like I'm crazy for telling them the car doesn't feel 'stable' on the road (or like it's drifting/crabbing) at highway speeds. It's good to know that there are others out there that have experienced this issue.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure how to get it resolved. Is the steering angle sensor the same as SZL module?

Yes the steering angle sensor is the same as the SZL module.

Quote: | Yes the steering angle sensor is the same as the SZL module. | It's two completly different things. They work together. LWS goes on the steering switch cluster(SZL). Anyways there's a recall now for replacing the optical piece inside the SZL, so you no longer get the whole SZL if your DSC light comes on.
More on topic, the reason your steering wheel is straight after the "repair" is because they have to initialize the sensor after the repair. This it where the the szl is taught straight ahead. If you have Active Steering its VERY sensitive and if its not calibrated correctly your steering wheel will be off. However if you dont have AL depending on your mileage, you will be reccomemded an aligment. Hope this helps.. i'm a bit buzzed so yea.

Quote: Sorry... I think I replied with my new post..
anyway. my dealer tells me that the engineers on these cars PURPOSELY set the center off to the right slightly in case you fall asleep at the wheel and the the car would drift to the right and NOT the left into traffic..
Has anyone heard this?
Sounds kind of strange
Sal | This is the biggest bunch of B.S. that I have ever heard. I had a Mercury dealer tell me this very thing on a Mercury Capri I had in the mid-70's. Turned out to be a bad steel belt on one of the front tires. This is the kind of crap a sleazy Service Advisor would try to tell an un-informed driver/owner to avoid trouble shooting the problem. I am very surprised that any BMW Service Advisor would try to pull this old ploy.
