BMW Alignment Techs: Lack of on-center feel, Help!
I've had my 550i now for 2 weeks, and I love it.
But when I drive on the highway, it doesn't seem to have any weight on center so that it stays the course with my hands off the wheel. Is it just me, or do others out there constantly feel like they have to dial in small corrections to keep the car straight.
My steering wheel is a click tilted to the right when the wheels are straight. Maybe it's my perception from that. All I know is that it's irritating as hell since the car should have been checked for this stuff upon delivery. Gotta get it straightened.

At which time I might consider (keyword might) an M6 or M3, only after extensively testing the car now knowing what to look and feel for.

Granted my 2003 540i SP had that great, thick M Sport wheel, but I expected the rack & pinion on the E60 to feel better than the RB on the E39. Just the opposite. | Same here now that I am getting on the Interstate more often; the steering is quite nice until I get up above 65 or so and then it gradually feels like I am sort of floating or something - almost boat-like in a very subtle way - lack of center feel is a good description. However, the steering wheel is straight and I don't get any drift that would indicate that kind of alignment problem.
Driving around the city streets at 35-45 MPH is fine - very nice in fact.
Could just be the RFTs - or some odd way the AS works or a problem. Pretty much is no fun to drive on the highway at this point though - feels as bad or worse than our GX470.
I'm coming off an E39 M5 with awesome Pilot Sports and trying to give the benefit of the doubt realizing that this is no M5, but the steering should feel as responsive or better than the X3 loaner I had a few days ago I'd hope
FWIW, the steering column is angled slightly toward the drivers side door as in all six BMWs I have ownedsince 1985.
AS / Sport / RFTs with about 250 miles on the car.
So what is the latest on this?

My problem is that the steering wheel is off-center by a click to the right, and there is a huge deadspot in the wheel on center at highway speeds. An interesting thing that makes me feel that this is a computer related problem is that the steering feels much more precise and direct when the car is cold. There is no deadspot during the first 1/2 hour of operation, then it just loosens up . . .very weird.
A BMW engineer will look at it this Thursday. Stay tuned.

Had the same problem while driving in Europe, huge deadspot. My friend had the same problem, he picked his car at same time as me. Now, when our cars got to US and we picked them up from the dealer the problem was gone. It is obvious that something was done at VPC. I don't know if this helps, just wanted to give the feedback on the problem.
| | Reply » BMW Alignment Techs: Lack of on-center feel, Help! | FWIW the upgrade to CIP 21 resolved all my complaints - the (non-active) steering is just fine now, around town and over 80. Now quite as much weight at my 540, but no prolbems at all.
Years ago I was a driving instructor for Mercedes Benz in their dealer program. MB's were notorious for having a dead spot on center, and it was actually designed into the car. We were told the reason was to keep you from sending the car into the guardrail if you sneezed on the Autobahn at 200 kph.
Don't know if this is true of BMW as well
