 Z4 & Steptronic - need help

Hey, great to be back at Bimmerfest. Gone for 2 years, enjoying my 330i ZHP. Fourth bimmer, best one.

But facing up to replacing it at end-of-lease and have decided on a new Z4 3.0si ... with Steptronic (Significant Other wants to drive it, hates stick shifts, I'm OK with that). Have driven the car and like the transmission, but find its various modes and actuators a bit mystifying. Have not located what I need, which is an online version of the owner manual or a detailed writeup of how this critter works. Have searched this forum w/o result.

Can anyone steer me onto the path of righteousness and knowledge on the topic of how the current-version Z4 Steptronic works and how to work it? Great thanks.

I have quite a few miles on the new Z4's with steptronic paddles. I think its a great comprimise. it shifts quick and smooth when using the paddles. not a manual but quite good. smoother than smg was in other cars I've driven. IMO

I have an 06 3.0si w/Step. If you use the paddles it goes into manual. The cool thing about it is that if you want it to be auto again, just do nothing! It will continue shifting normally.
How on earth does that work? That seems to suggest to me that either it would "revert" back into automatic mode just because you didn't shift when it wanted you to (annoying), or it would wait until you had hit redline once or twice before it decided you wanted to be back in auto mode, which is also annoying. I don't see how a system that works the way you described it (reverting to auto mode) could possibly delay upshifts like a semi-conscious driver might want to?
