 Z4 & Steptronic - need help

Hey, great to be back at Bimmerfest. Gone for 2 years, enjoying my 330i ZHP. Fourth bimmer, best one.

But facing up to replacing it at end-of-lease and have decided on a new Z4 3.0si ... with Steptronic (Significant Other wants to drive it, hates stick shifts, I'm OK with that). Have driven the car and like the transmission, but find its various modes and actuators a bit mystifying. Have not located what I need, which is an online version of the owner manual or a detailed writeup of how this critter works. Have searched this forum w/o result.

Can anyone steer me onto the path of righteousness and knowledge on the topic of how the current-version Z4 Steptronic works and how to work it? Great thanks.

Or consider a 2004/2005 Z4 with an SMG.

i'm not 100% on this, but now that the Z4 has the E90's engines it may have their 6 speed auto as well (which people who have seem to love)

it's allegedly a big improvement over the 5 speed

I've got the five speed step in my 05 3.0. I love it.

It's got an ordinary drive mode for your wife. Slip it into "d" and it'll shift through all five gears in the local K mart parking lot. You'll get good fuel economy, but this is not for you.

For you, flick the lever to the left and you're in "sport mode", here you have two choices, leave it in "s" and it'll hold the gears into higher rpms, or shift it yourself; you upshift by flicking the lever down, downshift by flicking the lever up - seems counter-intuitive, I know, but it actually makes sense.

The car screams in manual mode. If you launch it from 1st gear and hit redline, it'll shift to 2nd automatically - it's exhilarating!!

Mostly, around town, I start from 2nd and shift up through to 4th, reserving 5th for the interstates.

I'd rather have a manual for this car, but the truth is the step shifts faster than you can and your wife can drive it, same situation here.

Z4's are GREAT cars, btw, you'll absolutely love it.

Ed-

Great thanks and very encouraging...

The sport-mode part is clear and have experience w/ normal auto-D function in previous 528i and 530i (the one with the little V8). But - having spent all of a half hour behind the wheel of a demo Z4 - I am still a bit baffled about Manual mode. I understand blipping up and blipping down (in Z4 the paddles on the steering wheel are ergonomically neat-o), but the only way I could figure to get out of Manual mode once in it was to go back to full-auto Drive. Is this the right way or does the box somehow come out of Manual and resume Drive after time delay or other gimmick?

Again thanks. Expect it is starting to be the nicest part of the year in CT - I spent many years around New London/Groton driving submarines. Be well.
