Does anyone know about allocation & production?
Since I'm still waiting for a production date and a VIN , I'm wondering how the production scheduling works. Are dealers allocated a set number of slots per month, and once they reach their maximum, are they out of the running until the next month? It seems like forever, but it's only been a little over two weeks since my order was placed. The owner's site still has me in the "on order" status. If it's a wagon, does that make a difference -- less frequent production times.... Just curious. It'd be interesting to know the process if anyone's willing to write it all down here. | | Reply » Does anyone know about allocation & production? | yes, dealers do get allocations. When I ordered my 545, my dealer was only getting two 545's a month. Smaller market here in New Orleans. Don't know if being a wagon will have a meaningful impact, but it is conceivable that you could be bumped to your dealers next month's allocation.
But don't get caught up in what the owner's circle says, it runs behind, sometimes by a significant amount. It still said "awaiting transport" the day I took delivery...

When they input your order in the BMW production system, they can provide you a production number. You should ask for a copy of the "vehicle inquiry: design/MSRP" report, which includes the options ordered and status; and the "vehicle inquiry: status" report, which includes the requested & confirmed production weeks, and the various status steps the car has gone through, plus ship info (name, departure & estimated arrival dates) once the car is on a ship. Both reports also will show the VIN once it has been assigned.
The owners circle info is pretty much worthless, since it's delayed by at least a week. The most current info can be had from the dealer, and you can also call 800-831-1117 and speak to a customer service rep who has online info, but they lose tracking ability once the car is at the port awaiting departure. The 800 number also has an automated system, but that seems to be delayed by a few days.
Once your car's on a ship, if it's being delivered to an east coast port, you can track it with your VIN here: http://schedule.2wglobal.com/AppTrac...trackType=Auto
Tracking for west coast ports isn't available, since it's a different shipping company.
Here's the production status codes:
