 Speedo errors?

No, not a thread about failed swimwear.

How far off does your speedometer have to be to get it fixed under warrantee?
The speedometer in my M coupe reads about 10% high; the odometer is right on the money.

And introduce into an otherwise accurate digital system an analog component susceptible to drift, failure and misadjustment?
Well, the display device is an analog meter, so there must be a D/A converter in the system somewhere, and most of the D/A I ran into doing telemetry work converters had a provision for calibratiing their output.

If nothing else can the speedo's meter movement itself be calibrated mechanically? I am aware that the indicator needle can be biased, but that only helps if the error is a fixed amount, and I don't think my speedo is reading 12 mph at 5 mph, but it IS reading 77 mph at 70 mph. Can the bias on the return spring be adjusted?

Does anyone here know what the range of the meter movement is actually supposed to be?

I have read but have not confirmed that they use stepper motors rather than analog movements. They sweep out an amazing arc if they are the latter: more than 300 degrees!

I know a guy who always seems to have a few clusters around in various stages of disassembly. The next time I run into him, I will ask him about their movements.

Hmm, this thread reminded me of the situation where I was driving behind my wife, right after we bought her car last September. When we got back home I was asking her why she was doing 45mph in a 35mph zone (she is a new driver, btw) and she said she never went over the speed limit!!! That made me think at that time that maybe my speedometer is showing too much speed. And when I drive her car I think I am driving way faster than the same speeds on my car.

If someone can figure out how to safely add a calibration to the cluster, tehy will earn teh undying gratitude of the BMW community.

Oh, and while you are at it, figure out if you can remove the stupid dampening to the water temp and make it work properly.
