MP3 File Format for 2006 525i
First time to post. Hope this works. Does any one know the correct way to burn an MP3 CD that will show directories and file names. I have a 2006 525i that has nav system. It plays MP3's just fine, however it will not dispaly the file name or root directories in the way I labeld them on my computer. It will show thew ID tag correctly when the song plays. Any help would be appreciated.

I've verified the CD I made shows full file names on both Mac and Windows-XP so I don't think its how I've written the disc.... I did see a post here that said the MP3 files had to have 2.1 or 2.4 tags; and verified that my iTunes had placed 2.2 tags in my files --- SO I used a utility to add 2.4 tags. But that STILL didn't make any difference.
Can anybody that has full tag info (artist, song name, etc.) displayed verify what version of CIP software their car has?
Any clues why some see info and others (like me) only see short names of MP3?
Also, without goint to my dealer, is there an easy way (even by 'feature description') to know what version of software a car has?

The first problem is that those of us with Nav get a different "view" of MP3 file names. I'll try to explain without pictures: I had an MP3 CD that worked just great in a 530xiT without Nav. I could see the MP3 tags with two lines of data for the current track, but I only got the 8.3 format in my 2006 530xi *WITH* Nav using the same CD. I did some reading and some playing around. From what I have seen (and I'm on the CIP that came out last week, something like 20.1.01 they tell me), those of us with Nav don't get the full "currently playing" two-line song display that people without Nav get. Sounds strange, but it's what I've seen.
You can get a longer filename, and the ability to navigate folders on your Nav-equipped machine. I use Nero, and to get the best display, I burn the CD as an ISO, Max. of 31 characters (Level 2) with an ASCII character set, "allow path depth of more than 8 directories ", "allow more than 255 characters in path", and "allow more than 64 characters for Joliet names". I've attempted to attach a picture from the Nero program showing the options. If I get time, I'll also post some pictures that show the difference between what those of us with Nav see, and those without Nav see.
Also - I have not been able to get anything with CD Text to display (this has nothing to do with MP3 CD's, but I included it because it's strange).
Lastly - only your single-slot CD and your DVD will play MP3 (yes - you can load up a DVD-R with tons of songs and play that in your DVD slot where you normally stick your Nav DVD). You cannot play MP3 CD's in your CD changer.

It is NOT showing the MP3 ID tags for some reason. I'll have to try some other CD formats and see what happens. I'll also try and test this same CD on that 530xiT at the dealer (if they still have it).

Yes, I have NAV and so perhaps that is why I (we) only see file names.
I'm a Mac guy (OS-X wtih Toast as well as iTunes) so I will look into how to make ISO-9660 discs with longer 'normal' file names.
Hopefully we will end up with a set of postings that answers exactly what the current state of MP3 playback for Post-November build 2005 E60s REALLY is, and what can best be done to maximize the capability. -steve-

I have seen a service bulletin on this, however my stealer is denying that it will work (I just picked up the car today... )
