SMG or No SMG, please help!

SMG or No SMG, please help!

About to order 550i and wondering what are the pro's and con's to getting SMG added? Dealer tells me very few cars have it but I am wondering if I should add. I'm wondering if this is something that will hurt resell value or help it.

Also, if you know, can dealer charge me extra because they have to order from Germany? Also, what sort of down payment should I expect to pay and is it refundable?

Thanks. WMB.

I can't give you my two cents....but I do recall reading these articles:

http://www.caranddriver.com/article....rticle_id=1878
http://www.caranddriver.com/article....rticle_id=9150

Look at page 4 of the Z4 article...some rants and raves about the SMG are there.

There are pro's and con's all over this place and others re: SMG. Find one locally or regionally, get on a plane if you have to and spend some time behind the wheel for yourself. Make sure YOU like it before you place the order.

Also, if you're questioning resale value with SMG, don't bother ordering it!

What are you considering instead of SMG? Manual? Steptronic (auto)? Pros and cons will vary, depending on what you're comparing it to.

There are no rules regarding ordering a car vs. buying one from dealer inventory--the dealer can do whatever they want. I would think most dealers would give you a better price on a car in inventory, since they can sell it now.

Most dealers ask for a $1,000 deposit. Deposit refundability depends on what states you are in, and what type of contract--if any--you sign. In CA, for example, auto deposits are refundable by law.

Auto or manual is your choice.

You have to decide if you want a computer shifting or not.

SMG will not satisfy automatic lovers, nor will it satisfy manual lovers.

It is a hybrid of the two traditional trannys and has a long way to go to satisfy everyone. Which is why if you do research you will find some love it, some hate it. Plus there is SMG I, II, and III, and who knows what else BMW is coming out with next to make it better.

You gain nothing with an SMG except a slightly faster shift time and paddles shifters. Forget about car washes, valet parking, or loaning the car to anyone without adquate training.

Do your research before deciding. It could end up being a novelty that will wear off quickly.

You guys are great; much appreciated. I've got steptonic now in my 2002 530 and miss manual. SMG would be for wife and for city driving, nothing more. I guess I can do without it. Can't find a 550i anywhere within a hundred miles with one to test drive.
