 leather or leatherette

We are considering buying the new 2006 3 series bimmer and I would like an opinion as to whether to buy real leather or the leatherette. Is there a big difference or is it all in the mind
Thanks

There is a difference. The leather is nothing like leatherette. Leather is softer, more plush and durable. The leatherette option is somehting to consider though if you need to save a few bucks on your payment. It's better than cloth beyond question.

Just drove a leatherette loaner X3. The leatherette can fool a casual observer but any one serious about it will not confuse it with leather. However it is easier to clean, wears better and does not require maintenance. I have been told that it can become hot or cold in extreme weather and does not feel as comfortable as leather. However, with climate control and closed windows, the local climate inside the car will not make that a significant issue.

If you are buying, I would suggest that you get the leather (or the premium package since the difference is not much). It may help you sell it *faster* in the future. If you are leasing and worried about lease payments, go for the leatherette. It will be BMWFS' hassle to sell it in the future.
