I cant believe this is happening in my brand new BMW but unfortunately it is. First, my car has 4700 miles on it and has not been driven extremely or unusually hard nor has anything been done to the car since i purchased it in November 2005. The car has had no previous problems.
The problem first began about a month ago when sometimes when at a stoplight and at an idle the car would begin to idle rough and the RPM Gage would fluctuate down and up. I thought nothing of it since it only did it occasionally. Well it seemed that the problem went away until last Wednesday throughout the day the car would idle extremely rough and the engine would seem to shake when at an idle. However, when I got on the freeway to go home that evening the check engine light came on and the car began shaking and the RPMs dropping no matter how much gas i gave it so i pulled over pushed the BMW assist button and had a tow truck take it away.
I thought this would be a simple one day fix but apparently not. After hagging the service manager to finally look at the cat at 3:00 pm even though i called them at 730 when they opened to inform them of why my car was there. BMW of Chattanooga has been of terrible service ever since. After refusing to give me a rental car because i did not buy the car from them (bought in Atlanta moved to Chattanooga) i finally got in touch of the general manager who informed me that they were out of BMW's but would rent me one for free they had ordered the parts for the fuel system and assured me the car would be ready by today (Monday).
To make a long story shorter, they called me on Monday and informed me that they had the whole engine apart and had to replace some seals that they thought were causing the problem but they weren't sure. This is very disturbing to me, also the fact that they provided me with a jeep rental car which is not comparable to my BMW and i know its not in the warranty contract but having owned previous luxury vehicles, (inifiniti, Lexus, merc) they all provided me with a car whether i bought from the dealership or not that was comparable to the vehicle i drove.
Well i contacted BMW NA and they said they would call me back tomorrow and see what they can do. I also called BMW of Chattanooga and they said they are doing everything they can. I know this is uncommon in a car with less than 5000 miles on it to have the seal, and possibly the valves replaced. I am outraged by this! I love my BMW and would not trade it for anything but this is pushing it. I thought some form of service came when you bought a $50,000 car. What should i do? Is my car a lemon? all advice and tips appreciated greatly!! Help! (so sorry for the long post venting some)

u know i had a similar experience with my 545, and i have an smg so at the stop light its fine but when i give it gas it seems as if the clutch is confused and the engine acts eraticaly like it reves up and down when im barely touching the gas so we just left it alone and i have not noticed it since.

First of all, you pretty much have no choice but to trust that your dealer will get your car fixed. Second, it is dealer dependant on how they handle rental cars for you. They don't have to give you anything if they don't want to and use whatever excuse they want. Third, lemon laws vary state to state so you'll need to consult your DMV for such rules. Usually, the occurance must happen several times before the car is considered a lemon. Fourth, your reaction is not unfounded; you should expect a high quality of service with a marquee like BMW but it doesn't always happen. Just take it in stride and be reasonable and calm and you should be back to loving your BMW very soon!

Quote: | Just take it in stride and be reasonable and calm and you should be back to loving your BMW very soon! | All of those points were great, but this one was worth repeating. I've not been to my dealer's service department very often, but the few times that I've been there I like to people watch and see how the other customers act. Some of their behaviour makes me cringe. But I don't mind, as when it's my turn to talk to the service advisor I'm nice and calm and joke about the behaviour of others and I get great service because they know I'm a reasonable guy (but not a push-over by any means). I've actually heard a rant about a rental car that went pretty much along the lines mentioned by the original poster. "I didn't pay $65,000 to end up driving a Pontiac all day while you work on my car. I demand that you give me at least a 525."

Thanks for the comments guys, I calmed down and have been reasonable with the my BMW service dept. they are having a tech fly in tommorow who is supposed to be able to fix the problem. I know we all get unpatient and at the time i was really ticked about my service but now i am being treated right and will have my beloved BMW back again soon. Thanks for your comments and i will keep you updated.
By the way, the dealer says they think its something in the engine management computer or something now. Is that possible? Thanks.

Our cars are nothing more than computers with wheels any more so nothing surprises me. What once sounded like a pure mechanical problem is probably the computer doing something it shouldn't based on a faulty sensor reading.
